On Saturday 20th November I had the pleasure of attending a Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) graduation ceremony in Belfast. Prior to the event starting, I was delighted to have bumped into Robert Turley.
As a part-time Tutor for Training LMS, which is a CIOB-approved training provider, I visited Robbie in his workplace to help get a better understanding of his day job. At that stage he was the Joinery Workshop Manager for a leading contractor. When I was greeted by Robbie, I asked him to walk me around the workshop. I talked to him about the procedures in place and his involvement. I was able to quickly identify that Robbie was planning and organising the work for the joiners; he was liaising with other people throughout the company including the Contracts and Project Managers to ensure production was in alignment with programme requirements. A document on his Notice Board caught my eye. When I asked Robbie to tell me more about it, I realised that he had drafted it to prepare the workshop for what was an upcoming ISO audit to ensure health & safety compliance. I also identified how he was managing quality assurance in relation to what was being produced. He talked me through an example of how he identified a quality issue, worked out the source of the issue, and explained to me the steps he took to ensure it would not be repeated. Throughout the visit I identified other areas of his work where he was directly involved in decision making, contributing towards sustainable construction, managing information, demonstrating commercial awareness, developing people, being innovative, and using professional judgement in practical day-to-day scenarios.
Through some relatively minor assistance from me, Robbie was able to document workplace evidence of occupational and management competence, as well as a commitment to professionalism. Robbie subsequently submitted his application for chartership which was successful.
Robbie’s journey is an example of how the CIOB provides a pathway for people from academic and non-academic backgrounds to gain a professional qualification, which often springboards their career.
I was delighted to see Robbie receive his graduation certificate. Congratulations to Robbie and all the other graduates who were given recognition for their achievement.
