On Thursday 5th October 2023, I had the pleasure of attending the annual CEF Construction Excellence Awards at the Crowne Plaza in Belfast. What struck me on arrival was the amount of people; around 600 people had attended to recognise the work of the people in the construction industry in Northern Ireland. Like everybody, I enjoyed the meal, the entertainment, and atmosphere which is generated when so many like-minded people come together. I particularly enjoyed bumping into so many CIOB members who were there representing different companies and organisations. The climax of the event was the awards, which was well hosted by the ever-capable Sarah Travers and Geroge Clarke.
I have been a judge for the CEF Construction Excellence Awards for the last seven years. I have decided that now is the time for me to step back from the judging panel. Throughout my term, which has been insightful as well as enjoyable, I met with and interviewed many of the leading people behind the landmark projects. I have also been fortunate enough to get to know the other judges, all of whom are leaders in their sector.
As I reflect on my term on the judging panel, my conclusion is that cream always rises. In other words, the best projects will come to the fore. The annual event focuses primarily on the eye-catching construction projects, but really the event is all about the people who make the projects a success. Well done to the CEF for continually hosting a very successful annual awards event, but also well done to the construction professionals who lead the projects; their work helps shape the built environment which we all enjoy today.
